WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — The Department of Computer Science is hosting a Women in Data Science conference on March 5.
Speakers will include Jennifer Neville, associate professor and Miller Family Chair of computer science and statistics at Purdue; Wen-wen Tung, associate professor of atmospheric sciences at Purdue; Melba Crawford, associate dean of engineering for research and professor of agronomy, civil engineering and electrical and computer engineering at Purdue; Simina Brânzei, assistant professor of computer science at Purdue; Nicole Hunt, director of data science and solutions at Eli Lilly; and Sara Bigelow, senior associate of clinical data at Eli Lilly.
"It’s important to empower women in technical fields,” said Huda Nassar, a graduate student and co-organizer of the event. "Hearing these very accomplished women speak about their experiences in the field will help attendees envision themselves making a difference through data science."
The conference will take place in Lawson Hall, Room 1142. The conference is free and open to the public. A full schedule and registration can be found here.
Registration and coffee will begin at 8 a.m. before opening remarks at 9 a.m. In addition to talks from speakers, the conference will feature live streaming of talks from the Women in Data Science conference at Stanford.
“The Women in Data Science conference is a global phenomenon, and I’m delighted that our Department of Computer Science is hosting this momentous and significant event,” said Patrick J. Wolfe, Frederick L. Hovde Dean of the College of Science and Miller Family Professor of Statistics. “I’m even more pleased to showcase the work of these brilliant and innovative female data science researchers and experts, many of whom are our own Purdue scholars."
The conference will conclude with a panel discussion at 3 p.m. A Julia Computing workshop will follow the conference from 4-7 p.m.
Nicole Eikmeier co-organized the event. The Department of Computer Science is housed in the College of Science.
